Fire Extinguisher Types and Their Uses

Selecting the wrong extinguisher can make a fire worse. Workplace fire wardens need to recognise fuel types and match them to the correct extinguishing medium.

Common portable extinguishers include water, foam, CO₂, dry powder and wet chemical types. Each is suited to different fire classes — for example, CO₂ is often used on electrical equipment while wet chemical units address cooking oils.

Training should cover identification, safe approach, PASS technique, evacuation responsibilities and when not to fight a fire.
